The UNI 8065 standard came into effect on July 18, 2019, replacing the previous standard from 1989.
This new standard is referenced by numerous ministerial decrees that emphasize the importance of proper water treatment for improved boiler efficiency and energy savings.
What does the new standard cover?
The standard focuses on the treatment of water in systems for winter and summer climate control, for the production of domestic hot water, and in solar thermal systems.
The goal of the UNI 8065 standard is to define the chemical and physico-chemical parameters of water to limit the formation of scaling, corrosion, and to prevent bacterial growth in new-generation condensing boilers, thermostatic valves, heat meter controllers, and heat pump exchangers.
The guidelines provided by the UNI 8065 standard aim to:
- Optimize the performance of systems and their longevity.
- Ensure energy savings and environmental protection.
In fact, special attention is given to new technologies such as solar systems or radiant panels, which produce green and clean energy with almost zero environmental impact.

Here are the most important guidelines of UNI 8065:2019:
- Treat the water in all heating circuits with an inhibitor;
- Install a safety filter at the entrance of the heating and/or domestic hot water production circuit;
- Install a magnetic dirt separator filter on the return of the air conditioning circuit;
- Perform a preliminary flushing on new systems and restoration during system modifications (e.g., when replacing the boiler);
- Dose appropriate chemical conditioners and corrosion inhibitors;
- Install a water softener for systems with a power greater than 100 kW with a hardness of >= 15° Fr;
- Carry out periodic checks on the systems.
